The Ambitious Madame Bonaparte Ruth Hull Chatlien Books

As a fan of historical fiction, I was interested to read about a woman from history I had not previously known. The plot of an ambitious young woman in love transcends all ages and audiences. The story and the writing draws you in and makes you feel as if you are there witnessing the events occur, wishing you actually were to shake some sense into this Madame Bonaparte! At times I had to put the book down because she was ambitious to a fault during points in her life, but then I realized I'm reading some really great writing if such a range of emotion can be produced by a character in a book. The amount of time and research that must have gone into the story will blow you away because this isn't your George Washingtons you can Wikipedia easily, this is a minute character in history that you will learn to love and hate and love all again.

The Ambitious Madame Bonaparte Ruth Hull Chatlien Books Reviews

Although the protagonist, Betsy Patterson, is not a very loveable character, her story is extremely interesting. I love historical fiction and have read many post Revolutionary War books. This story which is partly in Baltimore and in Europe is different. Who knew that another Bonaparte had a story.
The author did amazing research to write this thoroughly satisfying novel. I loved it and highly recommend it. In fact, I have already told friends they would enjoy it.
What a great story—and a fun way to learn about someone I’d never heard of. I can’t say I cared much for Betsy Bonaparte at any point in the narrative, but that didn’t stop me from racing through the last third of the book to see how it all turned out.

Jerome’s treatment of Betsy didn’t surprise me, but her father’s last action did. I tended to side with her father throughout the story and was forced to reconsider after reading the ending. I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction filled with intriguing characters.
I'm afraid this book is historically accurate (which is why I gave it a 4 rating), however, by the end, the only one to like was Poor Bo. I grew up in Baltimore, so I can attest to the accuracy of the descriptions of the area in the early part of the book. Betsy Patterson's single minded determination is also lore with old Baltimoreans. There were surely no heroes in this slog but, if you are a Napoleonic junkie, you will love it. If you are looking for romance, this is not for you. I think the book would have been improved by reduction. To know Betsy was to love her less.
Very intriguing reading on Betsy whom was blessed with living in America when it was first at its earliest stages of independence. Betsy had a goal of being a princess and making it to the bright lights, almost to the comparison of making it big in Hollywood. Betsy wanted to get from up under her evil father. One evening she had the chance encounter of meeting the young dashing brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, Jerome. Well let's just say this fairy tale didn't have the happy ending with the Prince Madame Bonaparte was hoping for. Several dollars later, divorce, being a single mother and finally breaking free of her father's grasp, Betsy finally breaks free from her Cocoon. But is it too little too late? I guess you will have to read to find out.
I was totally engrossed in this well-written story about Betsy Patterson Bonaparte, the belle of Baltimore and the wife of Jerome Bonaparte, youngest brother of Napoleon. The story takes us thorough the adventures of one the 1800's jewels of society. I loved the rich detail about Betsy's life in this era…the clothes, the social life, the accepted etiquette of the times and the shocking flaunts of etiquette Betsy seemed to enjoy. Betsy rubbed elbows with presidents, royalty, and the cream of society. She was bright, witty and very sure of herself. I loved Ms. Chatlien's portrayal of this very interesting historical young woman as she dealt with her stern, no-nonsense father, her overburdened, fatigued mother, her flamboyant, peacockish love-interest and the other interesting people in her life. I recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and I'm sure you'll appreciate all the research that must have gone into the making of this story.
This book is a fictionalized biography of Betsy Patterson, a young woman in post revolutionary Maryland who has grown up with the dream of marrying a prince and living happily after in Europe. Her dream seems to be coming true when she meets and falls in love with young Jerome Bonaparte, the younger brother of the Emperor Napoleon. With the permission of her family, they are married, but she discovers that her husband not only married without his family's consent, he also lied about his age. The Emperor will not recognize the marriage because he has plans for dynastic marriages for all of his siblings. Her attempts establish herself as the legitimate wife constantly fails as she tries to join Jerome in Europe and introduce herself and their son to the family. This book is recommended for all those interested in this forgotten bit of history.
Very good read, but the main character is so obsessed that she never lets go of anything. She seems to go in circles, constantly repeating her feelings, beliefs, desires, goals, plans, angers. Betsy manages to charm and aggravate at the same time. After a lifetime of planning and posturing on behalf of her son fathered by the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte in a non-recognized marriage, she winds up with a non-ambitious son who couldn't care less. He takes the easy way out on many levels even to the point of marrying a wealthy American girl in secret with encouragement from Betsy's father who has little patience for her, so that he doesn't have to hear his mother's complaints about not marrying into European aristocracy. The ending was abrupt and disappointing. Hard to believe she turned a cold shoulder to her dying son. It appears her devotion was driven by the desire for a European title. When that opportunity was no longer in play, Betsy's motherly devotion waned.
