You Are Special Max Lucado Sergio Martinez 8601404374517 Books

We bought this book sort of as a comfort for my middle child who has some developmental and speech delays. She's 3 going on 4, and has started to realize she speaks differently than her sisters do, which makes her sad (and also breaks my heart that she's already self conscious about it). This book just resonates with her. Punchinello's being different stuck with her, for some reason, in a way that other books' "different" characters didn't. She requests that we read this book almost every night at bedtime, and sometimes asks to read it once more before falling asleep. We've gotten some other books that have a somewhat similar message - "I made you and I love you... what others think doesn't matter" - but their novelty (and her requesting to hear them) wore off as soon as they weren't new anymore. The look on her face when Eli tells Punchinello that he made him just the way he is and he loves him because of how he made him brought tears to my eyes. It's like she got it... she's special BECAUSE of who/how she is, not because of what she can do correctly. I have to admit, Mommy needed to hear the message, too. I might've teared up reading the book the first time.

You Are Special Max Lucado Sergio Martinez 8601404374517 Books Reviews

This book was purchased as a gift for our child after having read a free copy of it.

STORY
This is a well-written story teaching children and adults about how their personal worth is NOT derived from whether someone else likes or dislikes you or whether you excel or fail at sports and other activities. It outlines a little wooden doll's experience becoming depressed over the way others look down on him and how he meets his Maker and realizes that his value is rather based upon the fact that his Maker made him to be just who he is. It is an excellent story to read to your children. It is also used by psychologists and counselors to help adults with self-esteem issues.

ILLUSTRATIONS
The book is beautifully illustrated.

I hope this review will help you in your decision to purchase this book. You will be glad that you did!
I ordered three of the same book.
Two one purpose, one accidentally.
One never came to me, one reached my oldest sister who is expecting and the third got to me in one piece, will be shipped off to my other sister for her daughter soon. The book is wonderful. I remember this book when I was a kid, my mother used to read it to me. It is near and dear to my heart and I do firmly believe every child should have at least one of the Wemmicks books. They all hold a special meaning. Be it the love of a parent or that being an individual is important and so on.

If you have a child and you remember this book, buy it. You won't regret it. Read it to them every night and give them the book for when they're older.

If you don't know this book, buy it. Read it. And if you have kids or plan to have kids, read this to them. It's a beautiful book.
The review is not for the content.
I have to say this is the most disappointing book I have ever purchased. The print is small and cannot be enlarged. Unbelievably, the beautiful illustrations are not included. should return the money I wasted on this.
Love this story. I purchased this to give to the preschool children at my church as they "graduated" to kindergarten. It is a beautiful story about what makes us special. It is not our ability to do a great cartwheel or sing a song beautifully that makes us special, our "specialness" comes from being Children of God.
The primary message of this book is - you are special - extrinsically, by virtue of the fact that God made you (Made by Eli). But also that you are special intrinsically, because of the WAY he made you - SPECIALLY, and with a sense of purpose. You are special, in other words, INHERENTLY; because you are unique, as is all life, and as such, therefore, ALL LIFE is precious in His sight. Likewise, we are all equal - for “achievement does not, except by arbitrary definition, augment one’s intrinsic worth, nor failure detract from it.” (Albert Ellis) Nor is who you are the same as what you do, or Behaving the same as Being. These are but a few, of the many, many messages, hidden within this delightful book. Which, together with the illustrations, and the Wemmicks themselves, is perhaps the reason why we all love this book so much! (Or at least why I do). (The photos are of a Special ‘K Freed’ Edition I made for use in teaching Unconditional Self and Other Acceptance USA/UOA).
I love the story! My 3 star rating has nothing to do with the story, it is because of the paperbook's really small size. I should have checked before ordering but it is only about 4x6 inches and the beautiful illustrations are really hard to see because they are tiny. Also forget about trying to read the paperback version to 2 kids because they will constantly be climbing over you trying to see the illustrations.
This was probably the most impactful book of my childhood, as I took the theme of the book to heart, and I was able to apply the meaning of the book to my life while I was navigating a difficult time in my life where I felt that I was being given many "gray dots." I always remember thinking as a little girl, "I want to be like that lady Wemmick, who didn't let any of those dots stick to her--whether good or bad." It reminded me that I had to run to my Maker to be reminded of who I truly was, a beloved one of His creation--that was what I was to be defined by, not what my peers thought of me. I will read this to my children and any other children I get the chance to.
