Just finished reading this book. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. In general, it brought back so many memories of high school, reunions, music, and people. The steady action kept me enthralled and in suspense. Although this is a "whodoneit," it is also a study of personalities, and regional characteristics. The undercurrents of Vietnam, which become crucial to the story have prompted me to have my husband read this book (a Vietnam veteran). Thank you Sharyn McCrumb for your wonderful ballads.

This is the 1st book of the "ballad" series and introduces several characters that make their way through other books in the series. The story takes place over 20 years and brings back the Viet Nam Era.

This is a very interesting mystery book by Sharyn McCrumb! I have read 3 of her books and have enjoyed all of them. In fact I have started on the 4th one! Mrs. McCrumb brings her characters to life. So much so that you feel like you know them. In this book she brings in a lot of information about PTSD and what the Vietnam war caused our veterans. This hit home with me as my husband is a Vietnam Vet.
I enjoyed the characters, but found the story lines contrived, especially in the last few chapters.
Have you ever attended a high school reunion? Do you remember when the horror of the war in Viet Nam was in our living rooms every night? The first time I read this book was about 12 years ago. That time I was reading a 'whodunit' set in the mountains of east Tennessee. I just wanted to find out who was the murderer. When I reread "If Ever I Return Pretty Peggy-O" this fall, I was able to enjoy the author's multiple layers of context and discovered a piece of literature. Sharyn McCrumb is not just a formula mystery writer; her characters are real, and the contrast between the beauty of the mountain setting and hurting victims in the story give the reader a feeling of being inside the pages with the characters, a close spectator. And Vernon Woolwine is iconic.
As always, McCrumb has brought the mountains and the way of life in Appalachia to life with her incredible, insightful writing. She is a marvelous storyteller whose talent is strong gear due to her heritage. Romantic, mysterious, full of pride.
I did not like this book. The characters were not interesting or likable, and it was very slow-going. I soon began to skim large sections, particularly the Vietnam parts and the high school bits, past and present. Eventually I was skimming the whole thing just to get to the end and see if I was right about whodunnit or if there was some kind of twist. (Not really.) Its “social commentary” was pretentious, lacking much depth or insight. I will not read any more in the series.
