Energetic, cheerful and charmingly funny, the Geek Girl series fits in perfectly as a prelude to Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicolson and Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones. Georgia Nicolson seems like a "real" teenager and Bridget Jones is a more adult version of such a teen character, and both can be achingly funny and touching. But, for bigger than life antics and zesty good humor I'm happy to turn to Harriet Manners. The Geek Girl books read like a stoked middle grader's idea of what a great, fun teenaged life could be, and that's a very nice recommendation.
"Geek Girl" was supposed to be the first book in a trilogy, but it was so wildly successful in the U.K. and so loaded up with awards, that the trilogy has now been expanded to a planned six volume series, (of which four have been published in the U.K.). This book is the second in the series. It offers the same appealing Harriet, but we also see a good bit of the supporting players, which is fine because there is a broad range of characters on offer, most of whom have charms of their own.
First off, it's nice to have parents who aren't idiots or louts. Harriet has a good relationship with her Dad and step-Mom, and they get some of the best, and certainly most knowing, lines. Harriet's best friend Nat is everything you could want in a best friend, and lights up her scenes. Guys aren't quite so successful, and sometimes feel just like place holders for real characters, but that's O.K. because the point is to focus on Harriet and her travails.
I like the fact that we aren't heavily into Orange County mean girls or pretty Manhattan rich bitch liars. There's some of that, but it isn't the main focus and it is doesn't overwhelm this otherwise light and frothy concoction. There is drama and angst, but it so well modulated and Harriet is such a winning heroine that there is never any real threat to the characters' well being. And I mean that in a good way because I read this, most others read this, and scores of dozens of loads of youngsters will read this precisely because of the promise that the clouds will clear and the sun will come out by the end.
"Light" and "frothy" doesn't mean "dumb", or even "superficial". G.K. Chesterton once noted that, " It is easy to be heavy hard to be light. Satan fell by the force of gravity." I thought of that while reading this book. It takes real craft and restraint and touch to write books like those that make up the Geek Girl series. It takes tremendous skill to get the readers to completely invest themselves in Harriet and to completely buy in to the preposterous action, but Ms. Smale has accomplished this task with apparent ease. That's rather remarkable. And maybe that's why I liked this book so much. It is always fun to read something and to enjoy it and be entertained by it as written, while also and simultaneously admiring the skill behind its creation. And isn't that a great place to end up by the end of a book?
Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
Model Misfit is the second book in the Geek Girl series.
The Geek is back, and she's funnier than ever. If you loved the first book, then you will be head over heels for this one.
With the pressure of the new baby, a loss of a hot boyfriend, and Harriet's 'Summer of Fun Flow Chart' being put to waste when her best friend leaves her for the summer, things could not get any worse for Harriet. Thankfully, she has a fairy god mother named Wilbur who comes to the rescue with a new modelling job in Japan.
Harriet has not changed one bit, even though she may act a little older and wiser, she is still the same lovable girl you've met before. She still makes you laugh out loud, and feel like you're fifteen years old again with her crazy adventures and super fun spirit.
Holly Smale has outdone herself once again. This book is magnificent and its the perfect summer read that will make you smile and laugh. It is such an easy and enjoyable read, I just want to read the whole series all over again.
If you've read my review of the first book, you can tell just how much I love this series, and my feelings have definitely not changed since finishing the second book. It is just as good. In fact, it might even be a little bit better.
I highly encourage everyone who has started the series to continue on, because you will definitely not be disappointed. And if you haven't read this series yet... What are you still doing here? Go and get a copy of Geek Girl right away. )
Accidental model Harriet Manners is feeling unwanted and unloved. Her boyfriend has dumped her, her best friend Nat is spending the holidays in France, and her father and stepmother are expecting the pitter patter of tiny feet any day now and don't seem to want Harriet around. So when Yuka Ito wants to fly Harriet to Japan for a photo campaign Harriet leaps at the chance. She finds herself roommates with two other young models who seem nice enough but she is soon horrified to find that one of them, Poppy, is her ex-Lion Boy/Nick's new girlfriend. Despite this she finds herself falling in love with Japan which is kawaii (cute) and beautiful and like nothing she has ever experienced before. And all she has to do while she is there is ace her modelling shoots and try to avoid Nick. Should be simple but despite her best intentions nothing goes right. She blames herself but is something more sinister going on? And can Harriet fix things before her modelling career is ruined?
This is a story about friendships and love and trying to work out how you fit in the world. There are many heartwarming moments and Harriet is a lovable heroine.
Recommended.
