Raising the Stones Gollancz Sheri S Tepper 9781857983258 Books

I loved this book!
Mankind has spread out into the universe thanks to Doors with teleport-ability.
One of the planets recently colonized had a dying tribe of aliens (although, strictly speaking, the humans were the aliens), and only their little god statue was left after them...
In the meantime, all the other human cultures are, well, being human and complicating things for themselves, quarreling over land and religion and who is Right and who is Wrong and who should really get to be Top Banana and do we really have the right to interfere in the culture of others even when they are so very clearly doing stupid shit!

Some critics disregard Tepper claiming she is an eco-feminist. As if that is a bad thing, both in it self and in building exciting literary plots!

Some of the storylines in the book were utterly surprising, others were weaving down into an inevitable end.
The ending was maybe a little bit too much of a happy ending, in real life, storylines do not finish to neatly with the nice people happy and the rest properly sorted out.

And I do want to learn a bit more about the Porsa.

Also, is there a connection between the owlbrights and the Owldark from the next book?

Raising the Stones Gollancz Sheri S Tepper 9781857983258 Books Reviews

Sheri Tepper always delivers.
In this novel, Tepper creates a future society in which a variety religions and spiritualities must coexist. Conflicts among the various religion-influenced cultures drive the plot. The characters are well-drawn and the book is thought-provoking.
I purchased my copy through the Marketplace, largely because I wanted to own a copy of a story I'm very fond of. It's missing 32 pages but doesn't have a loose binding!

I'm not sure if it's a feature of the edition (First edition 1990) or some kind of library repair. Hopefully the missing pages don't disadvantage the story.
Imaginative sci-fi. A lot is from a feminist perspective. Refreshing and original.
Raising the Stones is the second novel in a sequence that starts with Grass and ends with Sideshow. Raising the Stones is primarily about religion and faith. Protagonist Sam Girat was transplanted in childhood from the patriarchal and violent nation of Vorstood to the matriarchal and boring planet of Hobbs Land. As he grows up, he becomes enchanted with an idealized and legendary vision of fatherhood and mythology.

Simultaneously, an indigenous fungal species infects the inhabitants of Hobbs Land, giving them peace, prosperity, and the ability to shape the world around their desires and dreams. The spread of the Hobbs Land Gods brings its followers into conflict with two different flavors of religious fundamentalism.

The story starts off slow, and reaches a conclusion that's two parts handwavium and one part divine intervention. Some of the theology seems a bit like axe-grinding in parts. But overall it's a good read.
Sheri Tepper is the most insightful writer who takes a common given and twists it
inside out until I am reexamining my whole belief system and making different choices.... her concepts are beautifully crafted and wonderfully completed...
this book has been out of print and i had to decide to pay big bucks for it...but
my previous copy had been gifted to a friend who didn't have it any more!!
This book is Sheri Tepper's solution to war...you would enjoy reading it if you
can find a copy!!
I should give five stars to this book, because the story, the writing, the characters, the ideas are all excellent! But the editing is terrible! There are full paragraphs missing in at least three parts of the book, and also there are lines missing in other areas. Fortunately, this problem does not make the book inintelligible, but for its price, I sincerely believe that Gollanz or should have edited it better. Buy it, anyway, but be warned.
